We're heading to San Francisco on Friday to visit Jesse's family. It will be Nate's first plane flight so I've been reading tips on how to make it go as smoothly as possible. Here's a few I'm going to try:
- Be the last person to board the plane. Airlines allow pre-boarding to people with children, but apparently this is one of the worst things you can do because that extends the time you're stuck in your seats on the plane. They say to let your kids get as much standing / walking time in as you can prior to borading. It makes sense, but I never thought about it. Jesse and I made a plan for one of us to pre-board with all the crap (carry-ons, car seat, etc.) to get it ready and the other person will stay in the terminal and be the last to board.
- Bring small toys that they like and pull one out every 30 minutes. I've packed a few items in my carry-on: Play-Doh, scissors, crayons, sticker book, matchbox cars.
- Bring along a favorite movie and DVD player. Nate loves Ants Bully so much that he wants to watch it every night. We're going to try to go a whole week without him watching it at home so that it's fresh entertainment on the plane.
- Take plenty of snacks - my selection was: raisins, peanut butter crackers, cheerios and fruit bars.
- Let him use a binky for take-off and landing to help ease ear pressure.
Let me know if you have other ideas I missed!
Here's some photos of Nate at the airshow a few weekends ago. He loved it!
Nate and I met up with Alica and Dylan this morning at Crown Center. We wanted to catch the 9:50 Kalidescope session at Hallmark. It's a free exhibit for kids and kids at heart. They provide all the elements - paper, tape, scissors, stickers and you provide the imagination. It was a hit with both kids!
Here's Nate's crown
After the session was over, we went across the street to the Crown Center shops. They were having an Irish Festival so all the water fountains were green. Nate and Dylan thought that was too cool.
Then we went inside to eat at Fritz's. It's a favorite with the kids. They have miniature trains overhead that deliver lunch to your table. It was of no surprise that Nate ate all of his food, some of my food and some of Dylan's food. God help me when he gets to be a teenager!
The next stop was Moneyville. Another free exhibit at Crown Center showing kids how money is made. They both got million dollar bills with their faces on them. Too bad they are not real!
It ended with a stop at the Candy Shop. We walked by and thought we were home free. Dylan somehow managed to catch a little glimpse out of the corner of his eye and went running. Nate followed and said "OOO" as he entered the door. We got some gummy dinosaurs and Andes Mints.
Nate crashed out 5 minutes into the drive home.
Our photographer friend came over on Wednesday and took some photos of Nate for his 2 year session. She teased us with a sneak peek of one of the favorites. Check her out at rpetersphotography.com.
I've been asked that a lot lately. No, I haven't stopped Voxing (I'm not crazy!) :) Nate came down with a virus and we had to admit him to the hospital, so I've been there with him for the past few days without net access. I'll post more about it later, but wanted everyone to know I am still here.
*edit* I updated this weekend's fiasco on Nate's blog.
I'm officially exhausted. I thought about not evening posting tonight, but then I thought...I can't quit on day 2 of the contest. That would be unlike me.
I left work at 3:00pm this afternoon and drove 30 minutes to pick up Nate from daycare and 15 more minutes the other direction to bring him to the doctor. Yes, he's sick AGAIN!
So, I arrive at the doctor's office at 4:00. Guess what time I got out? 6:30! Two and a half hours at the lovely doctor's office! To top it all off, I had to hold a 17 pound bowling ball (Nate) while standing because he cried...no, screamed when I sat down. My back is KILLING me!
Then I brought him home - another 15 minutes of driving and went back out to fill his prescriptions. Final arrival time at home - 7:15.
At this point, I'm tired and hungry and I feel like I've been hit by a MAC truck. Too tired to even fix dinner so I made a peanut butter and jelly sandwich to eat. Nutritious eh?
It's hard to believe it, but Nate is now two months old. He brings so much joy into my life! I love him to pieces!
Before having Nate, people at work asked me:
"What is the thing about motherhood that you're looking the most forward to?"
- Seeing and experiencing everything again for the first time through his eyes.
"What is thing you're looking the least forward to?
- Not being able to enjoy dessert by myself!
I think the one thing nobody told me about motherhood is that the first three weeks are the hardest, most stressful weeks of your life, but that it gets easier as time goes on. Everything you go though in the beginning is so worth it once you see your baby smile and laugh and discover new things.
