Do you have a pet? What kind of pet do you own, and why did you choose it?

Yes, we own one cat named Kingston.
I've loved cats ever since I can remember. We were allowed to have outdoor animals when I was growing up, but mom would never let them inside. She always felt that indoor animals = dirty house. I, of course, always wanted them inside with me so I could snuggle and play with them whenever I wanted.
I remember when I was around five, she was out and about so my siblings were babysitting me, I brought the cat with kittens inside the house. Not long after, I heard her pull into the driveway and I knew she'd have my butt if she found the cats inside. I quickly thought to hide them all in the coffee table - you know, the old kind that had doors. It was a perfect plan until they started meowing and she heard them. To which, I said..."I don't know how they got in here!". I'm dumbfounded as to why she didn't believe me. My story was so realistic :)
So, I always said that when I moved out I'd finally get my chance to have an indoor cat. My first place was with my sister who, to my shock, had the same feelings about indoor animals as mom. Two years later I moved in with Jesse a.k.a. Mr. Allergy. It took me 7 - yes, 7 years to talk him into letting me have a cat. One year for my birthday, he just caved and said, this year, you can have a cat for your birthday. I don't even think I gave him the chance to say he was kidding. We were at the animal shelter in less than 5 minutes picking out my new baby. Kingston's markings were so unique and when we held him, he was just like a ragdoll. It was love at first snuggle. I took him home and the rest is history.
Awhile back I posted about PetsMart refusing to groom my cat because they couldn't get him out of the cage. I thought they were crazy. My sweet little Kingston being a trouble maker? How could they accuse him of such a thing?!
Little did I know, Kingston has an alter ego and after three years of innocence, he finally revealed it to us. He's always been what we call a "special needs" kitty. He needs human contact or he goes stir crazy. Given this, we've never been able to leave him in the house by himself for longer than 2 nights. If we go out of town longer than that, we always board him.
The place we board him always require his vaccinations to be updated, so I made an appointment with the Vet. As soon as I walk into the Vet's office, Kingston starts meowing low. By the time we get into the room, he's gone crazy...hissing, yowling, ears straight back, eyes big as acorns, clawing at the side of the crate. Thinking he's just scared of the other people, I bend down and start talking to him to try and soothe him. He does the same thing to me! He was vicious! As soon as we got out in the car he was fine.
A few days later, we drop him off to board and guess what he does? The same thing! Jesse has to put on hawk gloves to get him out of the carrier and into a cage. Mind you, he's been to the Vet and to Boarding many times before, yet he's NEVER done this. Why now?
As far as we know, the only thing different is that we have a baby now. It's freaky!
I've always loved animals, with cats being my favorite. I grew up with cats and dogs and always wanted to have animals when I moved out on my own. It didn't quite work out though because the people I lived with never agreed to it. It took me seven years to talk my boyfriend into letting me have one! He let me go pick out one as a birthday present two years ago. I was so excited!
So, here's one of the loves of my life, Kingston. If you read my travel post, you know I love Jamaica, hence the cat's name. He drives me crazy sometimes, but he also makes me very happy which I think you can say about everyone you love.
We took him to PetsMart to be groomed a few weeks ago because his fur is so thick and he's shedding alot. I received a voicemail about an hour after dropping him off stating, "I don't think this is going to work. We can't get your cat out of the kennel". Can you believe a professional groomer was scared to stick their hand in the kennel and pull him out? Does he look ferocious?
We tried stacking stuff on him one night to see how much he'd put up with before waking up :)
