My sister's and I decided we needed to go on vacation together since it's something we've never done before. We were all kind of grumpy and needed a break from real life.
So, off we went to Daufuskie, SC for 6 days. Why there? Well, one of my sister's has a friend in the hotel management business and that is just where he happened to be. He was kind enough to be our host and save us lots of moola. Thanks Lester!
We flew into Savannah, GA and hopped a cab to the hotel check-in point on river street. You can only get to Daufuskie Island by ferry and we had a little time until the ferry arrived, so we strolled around the little shops, ate some fried chicken, bought some taffy and had a few laughs. After an hour on the ferry, we finally arrived to our little piece of paridise.
We checked in at the Main Inn where they informed us we were staying in a private ocean view cottage. We even got a "cottage cart" (golf cart) to stroll around the resort in! The cottage was beautiful and I think it was actually was bigger than my last house! 2 bedrooms, 2 baths, kitchen, living with fireplace, dining, laundry...it was like a home away from home.
That evening, we ate at Jack's Place and had the best, melt in your mouth filet minons and HUGE baked potatoes. We soon found out that there were only two places to eat - Jack's Place on the golf course or the Inn bar. Needless to say, it was a pretty remote island, with little to do but relax, which we loved.
The next morning, Alica had the brilliant idea of taking a morning walk on the beach. We all put our flip flops on, walked out the front door and complained that our toes were freezing all the way to the beach. We made it to the water (about 40 feet), turned around and ran back because it was so cold out! The next few days were colder than expected (around 40 degrees) and driving around in a golf cart with the wind blowing didn't make us any warmer. At one point, I joked we needed butt warmers. Later that same day, we had parked out golf cart in the sun and when we hopped back in, I said "Oh, my butt warmer is on!." Angie said "Oooh, mine is too!" Alica looked around the dashboard and said "really? where do you turn it on?". Angie and I died laughing! We think Alica left her brain at home.
Next on the agenda was horseback riding - we went through the woods and along the beach. It was very nice, except for Alica's horse had bad gas and mine was slow as molassas. Her gearshift must've been broken.
Our first spa treatment was that evening. Angie and I had pedicures - we were VERY determined to have pretty toes so we could wear our flip flops the rest of the trip. Alica had a massage.
We ate at the Main Inn because they had a special on Alaskan King crab legs, which Angie loves. Alica and I had chicken alfredo and we all three had dessert that was passed around the table. Yumo!
The following morning we went to the Spa again. Angie and I had manicures and Alica tried a mud bath. After lunch, we decided to venture outside the resort on our golf cart (shhh...don't tell hotel management!). It was very cold out, so we used some extra socks for gloves. We looked ridiculous! I had an inkling we wouldn't make it back, so that morning I stashed a package of oreos in my purse. We drove over to Bloody Point, the same area as the Spa which was about 15 minutes from the resort via golf cart.
The guy at the golf shop told us about some pertified wood on the beach and also an Eagle's nest near hole 6. We parked out cart and starting walking along the beach looking for shells, sand dollars and crabs which Angie just HAD to find. We took lots of funny photos along the way. It was starting to get late, so we headed back, hopped on our golf cart and started driving all over the golf course looking for hole 6....40 minutes later, we find it, but no eagle, just a nest! So, back onto the dirt trail to the resort. Five minutes later we start to smell something burning, which I swear is our golf cart. Angie and Alica play it off to be leaves. Then, POP, golf cart dies. Here we are, stuck in the woods, a 10 minute drive from the resort, it's getting dark and cold. I bust out my oreos and refuse to share.
Maintenance arrives 15 minutes later and we all pile into his truck. What a day!
Friday was warm, so we FINALLY got to wear flip-flops and capris. We went to the Spa yet again and all had hot stone massages. Mine was to-die-for. Joe was a perfect masseur - he knew just the right places and pressure. After our treatments, the driver took us on a tour of the island - it took a whole hour to cover with a stop at the t-shirt shop! :)
Saturday was very, very nice. The day started off at - guess where? - the Spa! We all three had Aromatherapy massages. Alas, mine was not with Joe. Alica and Angie stole him! I think it went back to me not sharing my oreos.
When we arrived back to our cottage, we decided to head to the general store to get sandwiches and chips for lunch, which we ate on the beach. Then, up the beach in a different directon ledus to Haig Point where there isn't really a beach - just loads and loads of oyster shells that line the water. I've never seen anything like it in my life!
Lester was finaly able to take some time away from work and have dinner with us, so we hopped on the ferry and headed into Savannah. Angie and Lester had dessert first - pralines. We ate at a seafood and steakhouse. I finally got to try fried green tomotoes. They were VERY spicy! Dinner was good, wine was good, the company was great! After dinner, it was back to the ferry. I busted out the ipod - Angie and I split the headphone and started singing duets - "Endless Love", "You're the Reason God Made Oklahoma", and some others I can't remember. I'm sure the boat crew thought we were drunk, but we were just high on life.
Sunday we didn't have any plans, so we ventured out in the golf cart again driving to all the places we wanted to take photos of - the church, Marshside Mama's restuarant, Art Gallary, Bloody Point beach again. We even got hit on by an old man that asked us back to his place!
It was a great trip! One we'll remember for many year to come. We laughed so hard at times, I almost peed my pants! It was like little teenagers giggling into the night. I don't think the continuous flow of wine helped the cause any! I'm sure we'll be laughing about the butt warmers story when we're 80!
